Hi JD!

I have an original issue - which was an all silver metal version.
It was issued to me after serving with 4SAI (or 62 Mech as we thought we were called) after Operation Moduler. I believe it was the 62 Mechanised Battalion equivalent of the 61 Mech Ops Balkie?

The 4 SAI operational badge was developed but it was not officially approved by an SADF directive, thus 4 SAI members were only allowed to wear it in their unit lines.

The 61 Mech Bn Gp "Operational Proffeciency Badge" appears in the 1993 SADF pamphlet Profficiency badges in the SADF and and so the "messie" could be worn on a members uniform outside the unit as well.

If my memory serves me right later versions of the 4 SAI operational badge had more of an side angle of the Ratel.

Two more examples of the 62 Mech ops badge. Hope it will help. And whether approved or not, if you earned it, wear it.
